Inzaghi: ‘Lazio damaged by refs’

Simone Inzaghi maintains Lazio “were damaged by refereeing decisions” and VAR in their last two games, but must increase intensity against Sampdoria.

The Biancocelesti are still smarting from the 1-1 draw with Fiorentina, decided by a last-gasp penalty awarded via VAR.

“We all saw what happened against Fiorentina and there are a lot of regrets, because we deserved to win and only allowed the Viola a few shots from distance,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Against both Roma and Fiorentina, we were damaged by refereeing decisions. That mustn’t be an excuse, because if we’d scored the second goal against Fiorentina, then we wouldn’t be in that situation.

“We’ve all got to get used to VAR being part of the sport, from players to Coaches and media. When someone scores a goal, now we have to wait for a few moments before celebrating. When I was a player, you only had to glance over at the linesman, but things have changed.

“What we really need is more uniformity in the decisions. It’s disappointing, because at the start of the season we were told that it would be used once every six or seven games, only for really clear-cut incidents.

“As I said, Lazio were penalised in the last two games, but at the same time, we should’ve done more too. We must be aggressive and hard-working, because evidently what we’ve got is not enough against an organised side.”

Lazio face a head-to-head for European qualification at Marassi with Marco Giampaolo’s Samp.

“Sampdoria are unbeaten at home, but we’ve worked well this week and hope to get back to winning ways. In a way it’s good that this season we’ve become unaccustomed to not winning for two games in a row. Similarly, there’s no reason to be alarmed if Ciro Immobile doesn’t score every match.

“We’re up against a strong team with great fans and a Coach I admire a great deal. Thanks to the lads, we are keeping up the pace with the leading sides and have to take it one game at a time.

“We won’t have a full week to work in training until Christmas now, as there’s the Europa League and Coppa Italia. It’s very cold right now in Rome, so with this temperature I preferred not to risk Felipe Anderson and Wallace, as with muscular injuries you need to be careful.”
