EDF: ‘Dzeko needs a goal’

Eusebio Di Francesco warned Roma and Edin Dzeko “need a goal” to break their psychological block against Benevento and beyond.

It kicks off on Sunday at 19.45 GMT, click here for a match preview.

“Daniele De Rossi and Patrik Schick will have fitness tests today and there’s a good chance they’ll both be in the squad. I hope De Rossi recovers, because we have few options in the middle of the park,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

That’s because Maxime Gonalons is injured with both Radja Nainggolan and Lorenzo Pellegrini suspended.

They ended their winless streak with a 1-0 victory away to Hellas Verona, but continue to struggle in front of goal.

“Roma are always attack-minded, but need to focus on finding a balance and I’ve seen that improving lately, both in games and in training.

“The statistics are clear, we create more chances than any other side in Serie A this season, meaning we have a style of play, an identity and know what we have to do. We must rediscover the determination and grit that we have been missing lately. I only know one way to break through that wall and that is to put the ball in the net.

“Look at Cengiz Under. After that goal against Verona, he has been scoring repeatedly in training where he didn’t before. I have been a player, so I know the importance of breaking a goal drought and these lads, above all Edin Dzeko, need a goal.

“All I can do is put them in the best position to score and ensure they have more shots on target. Dzeko is in fine shape physically, he trains hard and I’m convinced he’ll score as soon as possible, because we really need his goals.”

The Giallorossi are currently fifth in Serie A and preparing for the Champions League Round of 16 against Shakhtar Donetsk.

“Champions League qualification was one of the primary objectives for this season. We have this task, then the Round of 16, in which we must do our best. It’s difficult to talk about anything more than third place because of the gap that has been created in the table.

“I’m afraid Gonalons is unlikely to be fit in time for the first leg against Shakhtar Donetsk. Tomorrow it’ll be either Gregoire Defrel or Diego Perotti as the trequartista.”
