Roma director of sport Monchi urged his side to trouble Shakhtar Donetsk with “a high tempo” and give President James Pallotta a birthday gift.
“I think the night is important for everyone, from directors to club, Coach, players and fans. After many years, we have the possibility of going into the quarter-finals of the Champions League,” the director of sport told Mediaset Premium.
“I see resilience on the faces of the players, including over the last few days at Trigoria in training. The team knows what is in the balance today, Shakhtar are a strong side, but we have the right mentality to win the game.
“I think we must play with both head and heart, but above all a high tempo. When the tempo is high, Shakhtar tend to struggle. We saw that against both Napoli and Manchester City, so we’ve got to put the tempo up from the start.”
Today is also the birthday of Roma President Jim Pallotta.
“I am convinced the best gift would be qualification. He wants nothing more. I don’t think the work of a club can be judged by a single game, but if we get through to the next round tonight, the fans will be happier with those of us who work at Roma.”
