Roma sporting director Monchi explains why he’s mentoring Francesco Totti – “he’s a superhero, it’s unthinkable not to use his powers”.
The Giallorossi legend retired at the end of last season, and he’s now taken up a role as a director with the club.
Er Pupone has been working closely with the transfer guru, and Monchi can’t speak highly enough of the Scudetto winner.
“Francesco has such great credibility that Roma couldn’t fail to use him,” the former goalkeeper told Fox Sports.
“He’s a superhero, it’s unthinkable not to use his powers.”
Monchi was also asked about his arrival in the Italian capital, as well as his philosophy as a sporting director.
“I listened to what I was being offered and I came to the conclusion that this was the club that offered me the closest to what I had in mind to keep winning.
“I needed a team that wanted to take a sporting director, but first and foremost a person.
“Dani Alves represents the philosophy that I like best, that is to buy a semi-unknown player, have the patience to wait for his adaptation, make sure that he helps the team to reach its goals and then sell for a profit.
“That’s a perfect job for a sporting director. All clubs sell, but you do not do it because you want to do it, but to raise the level of a team as a whole.
“My objective at Roma? To give the fan what he wants: to feel proud of his team, and see them achieve their sporting objectives.
“Not one trophy though, I’m looking for stable success. Winning one trophy isn’t an incredible feat, bringing Roma to a consistently high level is something altogether different.”
