Monchi: ‘At 5-0, Roma were dead…’

Roma director Monchi has hope they can turn the 5-2 defeat to Liverpool around. “At 5-0 we were dead, but now we have a chance.”

The Giallorossi were torn to shreds at Anfield, trailing 5-0 to braces from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, but two late away goals from Edin Dzeko and Diego Perotti leave the door open.

“It’s a difficult situation. We had a lot of faith going into this game, the result is not good, but until 10 minutes from the end it was worse. We were practically eliminated,” the director of sport told Mediaset Premium.

“Now we have a chance. It’s still difficult, but we have a chance and must use that the way we did against Barcelona.”

Roma had lost the first leg of their quarter-final 4-1 at Barcelona only to win the second leg 3-0, and they need an identical result in the Champions League semi-final too.

“I still have faith in my squad, albeit knowing it’ll be very, very difficult. Liverpool will know that Roma have already turned around a situation like this and will be ready for anything.

“I think we had a good attitude in the first 20 minutes, we did everything we had to do, but then we got a little frightened with the first Mane chance and dropped out of the game. If you do that against this Liverpool, you can’t get back into your stride.

“We were dead, but now we have a little bit of life and must use that the way we did against Barcelona. We must have faith and believe. I think the fans will be behind us, 90 minutes at the Olimpico for a side like Liverpool will be very difficult.”
