Monchi: ‘Roma still working’

Roma sporting director Monchi assures “we’re still working” but points out they’ve already signed “10-11 players”.

The Giallorossi have signed the likes of Justin Kluivert, Javier Pastore and Bryan Cristante this summer, but fans have been concerned by the departures of Radja Nainggolan and Alisson.

“We’re working on opportunities, more than a specific profile,” Monchi explained at Robin Olsen’s presentation in Boston.

“Having taken 10-11 players before anything else it can’t suddenly become a problem. If I came out here today and made a surprise announcement that we’d signed

Pastore and Kluivert, everyone would think they were big signings, but we signed them a month ago.

“Everyone likes it when new players arrive. We’ve sold two great players, but we’ve got a lot of them and we’re working to improve the squad.

“Malcom was an opportunity because he was strong and the financial conditions were good. Now we’re looking for an opportunity to improve the team, we’ve done important things and we’re still working.

“Taking a midfielder isn’t a priority, we’re trying to improve the team and the job of a sporting director is to understand what a squad needs.

“We haven’t had any offers for [Diego] Perotti, we’re not evaluating a sale for him because we haven’t had any offers.”

Sweden goalkeeper Olsen has been signed to replace Alisson, but Monchi has previously said he doesn’t like to sign players on the back of a good World Cup…

“I didn’t say I don’t like World Cup players, that would mean I don’t like [Lionel] Messi either.

“I don’t like signing players who haven’t been on a good path but then excel in the World Cup. That’s not the case for Olsen, who I’ve known for a long time and who we’ve been following since before the World Cup.

“I was looking for an experienced goalkeeper, a guarantee, someone who knew what it takes to play at the highest levels.

“I like sober goalkeepers, not too spectacular, with good technique. He has all that and was hungry to play for a big team like Roma.”
