Gattuso: ‘Good Milan football’

Gennaro Gattuso said Milan have “a complete squad and can play good football this year” after their 2-1 victory over Roma.

Franck Kessie’s opener was cancelled out by Federico Fazio, but deep into stoppages Patrick Cutrone ran on to a Gonzalo Higuain through ball to beat Robin Olsen.

“It’s the second match and already people are asking me if it’s a turning point. There were huge regrets over the defeat to Napoli, we played even better in the first 45 minutes tonight,” Rino told Sky Sport Italia.

“There are four or five sides who have strengthened this season and we’re one of them, but I can’t talk about a turning point after two games. I know how our lads work and that we still need to become a team in some areas.

“We can’t think that we’ll control every game against any opponent. We have to play the ball and that’s essential.”

Gattuso is trying to introduce a more attractive style of football this season and it was already on show when leading Napoli 2-0 only to lose 3-2 last week.

“The club has given me a complete squad with strength in areas we didn’t have before. We had four or five great counter-attacks in the second half and didn’t take them, so we must improve in that sense.”

Kaka was in the stands with new directors Leonardo and Paolo Maldini at a packed San Siro.

“It’s only right that there is enthusiasm for those who wrote the history of Milan, but we mustn’t think that the current squad should shoulder all that. We must find our motivation by ourselves, on the training field every day. We can play good football this year, work with greater calm than last season and do good things.

“Roma have a lot of quality and our problem still is that we go too deep and get anxious when under pressure. I think a lot depends on the defensive line. Our problem is when the defensive line gets scared, as it has a knock-on effect for the rest of the team.

“Some players aren’t sharp yet, while others like Diego Laxalt and Samu Castillejo have naturally sparkling legs and gave us a real boost this evening.”

Gattuso was asked why the Rossoneri don’t yet have his determination and he again defended Lucas Biglia.

“Not everyone is a water-carrier. If it’s a battle, then I could still do a job in there… I still say Biglia is essential. He’s not the most determined or gritty, but he keeps his position, controls the shape of the midfield and gets us out of a lot of problems.

“Higuain is one of the keys behind our passing moves, as he plays a very important role in getting the whole team working when he drops back and combines with others.

“At this moment, Patrick is a player we all love, he’s not having much space now, but soon we’ll be playing every three or four days and there will be room for everyone.”
