Longo: ‘Frosinone had hoped…’

Frosinone Coach Moreno Longo admits he had hoped to “grab a precious point by hanging on with teeth and nails” until the late Juventus goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo finally found a breakthrough at the 81st minute, then Federico Bernardeschi added a second in stoppages.

“Of course when you’re at 0-0 with eight minutes to go, the thought is there to grab a precious point with determination, sacrifice, hanging on with your teeth and nails,” Longo told Sky Sport Italia.

“On paper, this could’ve been lost before we even started, but we put up a real fight and made them work hard for their victory. I just wish we’d put more players in the box on crosses and set plays.

“A team like ours that needs to survive against relegation needs this spirit throughout the 90 minutes above all else, as we cannot give away any gifts.

“We lost 5-0 to Sampdoria, but we were right in it and had numerous chances until the second goal, at which point we saw it as insurmountable and gave up.

“If Chievo had done that against Roma, they wouldn’t have emerged with a 2-2 draw. In these big games against the top clubs, the most important thing is to stay in the game.

“In the opening round, we took on an Atalanta side that had five competitive games under their belt already and were so confident that in my view they were on a par with tonight’s Juventus.”
