Rolando Maran felt nine-man Cagliari earned a “thoroughly deserved point” in the dramatic 2-2 draw with Roma.
The Sardinians looked to be inevitably losing their unbeaten home record when trailing 2-0, then at 2-1 they had both Darijo Srna and Luca Ceppitelli sent off for dissent.
Incredibly, Marco Sau sprung the offside trap and out-sprinted the defenders to snatch a 2-2 draw with the last kick of the game.
“We had more possession, we had as many shots on goal as Roma, so the statistics suggest it was a thoroughly deserved point,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“The lads kept a cool head and showed character, because it would’ve been very easy to fall apart. Even when 2-0 down, they never stopped playing their football and pushed right to the end.
“We have some incredible fans who push us on and we want to match their intensity. The result is also down to them. The fans see a team that will never give in and in turn they provide the extra push.”
Maran was also sent off for dissent just before the two reds for his players.
“I don’t want to talk about the referee or the incidents. I don’t know what I said to make him send me off either. I don’t think the players went over the line.”
