Claudio Ranieri praised “leader, the soul of this team” Daniele De Rossi after Roma’s 1-0 win away to Sampdoria. “This mentality is what we need.”
Although Samp dominated the game with over 60 per cent possession, De Rossi bundled over the line after Emil Audero parried a Patrik Schick header.
“This mentality is what every team needs, the desire to help each other out,” the Coach told DAZN.
“Sampdoria play one or two touch football, so they are a very difficult side to press. The lads put in a wonderful performance. De Rossi is the soul of this team, the captain, the man who gets fired up and in turn fires up his teammates.
“I need a leader in this squad and that man is De Rossi, because all the others follow him. He is important for Roma and for this team.
“We came here wanting to win, but knowing Roma’s history in this fixture, we were about to concede at the 95th minute. I like wingers who spread the play when we have the ball and cut inside to close the spaces when we don’t. Samp did very well to get the ball between the lines, but the midfielders and defenders deserve praise for cutting almost all of them out.
“Nicolò Zaniolo is so relaxed on the ball. He has to improve, but he’s 19 years old and has a long path ahead of him. The lad is eager and that is important.”
