Maran: Cagliari, keep the focus

Cagliari look to have retained their Serie A status, but Coach Rolando Maran wants them to stay focused on making themselves ‘mathematically safe’.

The former Chievo boss emphasised at a Press conference just how much he did not want his side to squander 10th place, with his side 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

“This week was a good week,” he explained.

“We reached 40 points, which was our objective for a while now, but now we have to focus on making sure we reach mathematical safety, then we can think about finishing as high up the table as possible.

“We are 10th right now and we don’t want to lose that position. We will try to make the President and fans happy.”

Cagliari travel to Roma on Saturday, and Maran is fully aware of the threat posed by the Champions League-chasing Giallorossi.

“Roma are fighting to qualify for the Champions League. They are a team who cover the whole the field, defend from the front and make it hard for you to break them down.

“We will need complete concentration and give them our full attention, but we can put them in difficulty.

“The first game between us was a good result and was an example of how you never should give up.”

The Isolani fought back to draw 2-2 with the Lupi in December’s previous meeting, and the 54-year-old finished up by talking about his squad and injuries his team had picked up.

“We will miss Lucas Castro and Ragnar Klavan. Alberto Cerri has been called up, but his fitness will have to be evaluated tomorrow.

“We will, however, be able to recover those players that missed out against Frosinone.

“The important thing though is that the performances levels don’t drop, no matter who takes to the field. Paolo Farago will be missed, although we have replacements.

“Everybody is working hard in training, especially Christian Oliva who will soon earn some time on the pitch. He is adapting well and there is no need to worry about him not playing yet.

“There are plenty of games coming up and there will be space for everyone. Yhe important thing is to always give everything.”
