Pirlo, Mazzone, Boniek in Hall of Fame

Andrea Pirlo, Zbigniew Boniek, Carlo Mazzone, Pietro Anastasi and Romelu Lukaku are among those to be honoured in the Italian Football Hall of Fame.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced the new inductees for 2020 to the institution first founded in 2011.

In this ninth edition, which will be held on May 4 in Florence, former Inter, Milan and Juventus star Andrea Pirlo will be awarded his place in the Hall of Fame for Italian players.

He’ll join Roberto Baggio, Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi, Fabio Cannavaro, Gianluca Vialli, Giuseppe Bergomi, Alessandro Del Piero and Francesco Totti.

Boniek will be placed in the group of foreign players who have made a significant impact on Serie A, while former Roma, Bologna and Brescia coach Carlo Mazzone is inducted to join the likes of Arrigo Sacchi, Marcello Lippi, Giovanni Trapattoni and Fabio Capello.

Antonio Percassi takes his place in the group of directors thanks to the extraordinary advance of Atalanta, who this season participated in the Champions League for the first time.

There are also awards for referee Alberto Michelotti, Inter director Gabriele Oriali, Italy women’s star Sara Gama, while awards mark the memory of recently-departed Pietro Anastasi and Luigi Radice.

Inter striker Lukaku will also receive this year’s edition of the Astori Award, named after the Fiorentina captain and given to those who show fair play.

Lukaku is named as one of the figures representing a stand against racism and for handing a penalty over to 17-year-old teammate Sebastiano Esposito so he could score his first Serie A goal.

Another recipient of the award is Mattia Agnese, a 17-year-old player for local side Ospedaletti who saved the life of an opponent who had lost consciousness following a clash of heads.
