Tommasi: ‘No Coronavirus neutral turf’

Players’ Association President Damiano Tommasi called the possibility of playing Inter-Getafe and Sevilla-Roma on neutral turf due to the Coronavirus outbreak “absurd.”

UEFA today finally announced that Thursday’s games would not go ahead, as Spain has blocked all flights to and from Italy.

Getafe director general Clemente Villaverde told reporters that UEFA were considering a one-off knockout match on neutral turf for the Round of 16 rather than home and away legs.

This would be played next week and therefore allow them to find a winner before the draw for the quarter-finals.

“The World Health Organisation just declared Coronavirus a global pandemic,” AIC President Tommasi told news agency ANSA.

“That means it is absurd to talk about the possibility of neutral turf in football at this time. We are all involved. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as neutral turf in this emergency.”
