Virologist: ‘Why not let fans in?’

An Italian virologist points out if audiences are allowed in open-air concerts or theatres, ‘there’s no reason why football fans shouldn’t be treated the same way.’

While group training should be able to resume from Monday – if the medical protocol can be agreed – the issue of seeing supporters in the stands is a very long way off clarification.

“I don’t understand why there are so many fears on reopening the gates to football and none when authorising an open-air concert,” virologist Maria Rita Gismondo told the Corriere dello Sport.

“The rules to ensure safety, like social distancing and obligatory masks, are the same in a stadium as when attending an opera. In fact, the rules would be easier to apply in a stadium than a theatre.

“I would say that it’d be better to postpone these openings, but if the theatre is open, then there’s no reason why football fans shouldn’t be treated the same way.”
