There is a bizarre conspiracy theory, pushed by Benevento Mayor Clemente Mastella, suggesting two Serie A clubs are hiding COVID-19 cases so they can then potentially cut the season short.
The suggestion first emerged in the Corriere dello Sport newspaper, where editor Ivan Zazzaroni’s column spoke of a “rumour that two Serie A teams are covering up positive results, waiting to announce them at the right moment and stop everything.
“Few considered this rumour to be reliable, but in the country of suspicions, there’s always going to be someone ready to call a whisper a hurricane.”
This is precisely what followed, as today Mayor of Benevento Mastella demanded “an immediate investigation into Ivan Zazzaroni’s editorial in the Corriere dello Sport.
“There is too much sneakiness around and strong interests to be protected. I am disappointed that some are prepared to deal with this indecent situation. We also ask that those who are in the FIGC counsel tomorrow and are dealing with a conflict of interests should abstain from voting.”
Benevento are concerned that their promotion into Serie A could be cancelled, despite being 20 points clear at the top of the Serie B table.
On Friday, 16 out of 20 Serie A clubs voted to not assign a Scudetto, freezing promotion and relegation, if the season was stopped early due to COVID-19.
Milan were the only club who voted against it, while Roma, Lazio and Napoli abstained.
Many expect the FIGC to veto that suggestion tomorrow, instead focusing on play-offs or a calculated algorithm to decide the table.
