Spinazzola: I prefer the left

Roma’s Leonardo Spinazzola says “I feel much better” playing as a left-back, despite Paulo Fonseca using him on the right.

Spinazzola became renowned for his performances on the left with Atalanta, earning him a second chance at Juve and consequently a move to Roma.

However, five of his seven appearances under Fonseca this season have come on the opposite side.

“In these last matches with Roma, we’ve created a lot and conceded little,” he told reporters from Coverciano, where Italy are training ahead of their Euro 2020 qualifier with Greece.

“There are games where you have 10 shots on target but only one goes in. Now we’re missing so many quality players in attack and we don’t have many optons.

“Having said that, we’re all up there in the table: Juve have something more, Inter too.

“We’ve changed a lot so far: Coach, players and formation, with a new style of play.

“Fonseca creates so many expectations, in the dressing room too, and we feel really good with him. We still have a lot of time to bounce back.

“It’ll be nice to play in Rome. I think there will be a great party atmosphere, with the stadium full, and the Romans will give us so much warmth like they always do.

“Representing Italy and doing it at the Olimpico gives you even more of a buzz. The Coach will decide whether I play.

“We’re a very good team, with two or more players covering every positions. We’re a strong national team with some top defenders, who play for the best teams in Italy and Europe.

“I’ve always played on the left, and I feel much better there. I’ll play on the right if the Coach wants me to, but I’m not used to covering that area of the pitch.

“However, if I play more games on the right then it’s not a case of me forgetting how to play on the left.

“I played as a winger six years ago, but I prefer to play deeper because I have a lot more field.

“I’ll play where the Coach wants me to. I have the luck – or misfortune – of being able to cover several positions.”

Roma to appeal Fonseca ban

Roma have decided to appeal Paulo Fonseca’s touchline ban for his expulsion against Cagliari.

The FIGC suspended Fonseca for Roma’s next two Serie A games after he ranted at the referee during Roma’s controversial 1-1 draw with Cagliari last Sunday.

However, Gazzetta dello Sport reports the Giallorossi are having none of it and have already decided to file an appeal.

Although the ban is unlikely to be completely revoked, the newspaper notes they would like it to be reduced to just one game.

The Coach would also benefit from having immediately recognised his mistake, as per the recent case of Torino boss Walter Mazzarri.

As it stands, the Coach’s assistant Nuno Campos will be in the dugout against Sampdoria and Milan.
